Amendment to Marriage Act Receives Royal Assent - July 21, 2005

In Canada gay, lesbian and heterosexual couples are now on an equal footing with the changes to the federal Marriage Act. This amendment removed ref erences to 'opposite' sex in the Canadian marriage legislation. Passage of the amendment was widely covered in Canadian news.

Canada has some real advantages for same sex couples.

When compared to the United States, Canada has always been known as a kinder, gentler nation.

Whether it is a national medical care system so everyone has access to a physician, or attitudes to same sex couples, Canada offers a climate where the temperature may be cooler but the social climate is accepting - and actually where we live the climate is not that cold - similar to Seattle's climate.

Over the last ten years, Canada was ranked first many times by the United Nations as the best country in the world in which to live.

For same sex couples Canada offers a lot:

If you are immigrating as independent immigrants, Canada will recognize your relationship. You must have lived together for a year or more, OR, you must be married. Same sex marriages that take place in Canada, are recognized throughout the country.

But more importantly the law in Canada is a reflection of what Canadians want. That is a tolerant society where you can get on with your lives.

We've worked with couples where one member is from a country that required visas to Canada. We can sometimes offer solutions where none appear available.

Canada also offers a society where gun laws are restrictive and a society where violence is minimal compared to the United States. Capital punishment was ended in the early 1970's.
